A fast, flavorful marinade using soy sauce and citrus to keep your tuna steaks tender before grilling or searing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, lime juice, olive oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, and black pepper until combined.
  2. Place your tuna steaks in a shallow dish or a resealable plastic bag.
  3. Pour the marinade over the tuna steaks, ensuring both sides are coated.
  4. Marinate the tuna for 15 to 30 minutes at room temperature. Do not marinate longer than 30 minutes as the acid can begin to ‘cook’ the fish.
  5. Remove the tuna from the marinade and pat dry with paper towels before cooking. Discard the remaining marinade.

Notes

  • For grilling, aim for 2-3 minutes per side for medium-rare.
  • If using a cast iron skillet, heat the pan until it is very hot before adding the steaks.
  • You can substitute lemon juice for lime juice if you prefer.
