Make this easy homemade apple crumble featuring tender, cinnamon-spiced apples under a buttery, crispy oat topping. This classic fall dessert is simple to prepare and delivers pure comfort.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar (for topping)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly butter an 8×8 inch baking dish or a similar sized oven-safe dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. Spread the spiced apple mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, prepare the crumble topping. Combine the 1/2 cup flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt. Mix these dry ingredients together with a fork.
  5. Cut in the cold butter pieces using your fingertips or a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces remaining. Do not overmix.
  6. Sprinkle the buttery crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
  7. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
  8. Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Serve this warm apple dessert plain or with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • For the best texture, use a mix of tart and sweet apples.
  • If you prefer a crispier topping, chill the topping mixture for 10 minutes before sprinkling it over the apples.
  • This recipe is a great no fuss pie alternative for a quick dessert.
