Make homemade banana chips that are perfectly crispy and sweet using your air fryer. This recipe skips deep frying and delivers a satisfying, sweet spiced banana snack quickly.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 firm, slightly under-ripe green bananas
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice (optional, for preventing browning)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bananas: Peel the bananas. If you want to prevent immediate browning, lightly toss the peeled bananas with lemon juice.
  2. Slice the bananas: Use a mandoline or a very sharp knife to slice the bananas thinly, aiming for a uniform thickness of about 1/16 to 1/8 inch. Uniformity helps them crisp evenly.
  3. Mix the coating: In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon until fully mixed.
  4. Coat the slices: Place the banana slices in a medium bowl. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture over the slices and gently toss them until each slice is lightly coated.
  5. Arrange in the air fryer: Place the coated banana slices in a single layer in your air fryer basket. Do not overlap them, as this prevents crisping. You will need to work in batches.
  6. Air fry the chips: Cook at 300 degrees Fahrenheit (150 degrees Celsius) for 10 to 15 minutes.
  7. Shake and check: Halfway through the cooking time (around 6-7 minutes), carefully pull out the basket and shake it well to turn the chips.
  8. Finish cooking: Continue cooking until the chips are golden brown and feel firm and dry to the touch. Cooking time varies based on air fryer model and slice thickness.
  9. Cool completely: Remove the chips from the air fryer and let them cool completely on a wire rack. They will crisp up significantly as they cool.

Notes

  • Use firm, slightly green bananas; overly ripe bananas will become mushy instead of crispy.
  • For a healthier option, reduce the sugar to 1 tablespoon or substitute with a zero-calorie sweetener blend.
  • If your chips are not crisping, return them to the air fryer for another 2-3 minutes at 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
