Make handheld cinnamon sugar dessert bars that taste just like your favorite fried dough treat, but baked right in a brownie pan.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar for topping
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8×8 inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set this aside.
  3. In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the softened butter and 1/2 cup sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until just combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix the dough.
  6. Press the dough evenly into the prepared baking pan.
  7. In a small bowl, mix the 1/2 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons cinnamon for the topping. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the dough in the pan.
  8. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the churro bars cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.

Notes

  • For a slightly crispier edge, you can lightly brush the top with melted butter before adding the cinnamon sugar topping.
  • If you prefer a traditional fried texture, you can pipe the dough (if using a pastry bag) and fry pieces until golden brown, then toss immediately in cinnamon sugar.
  • Serve these handheld cinnamon treats warm or at room temperature.
