Make this creamy, savory French Onion Dip from scratch. Slow-cooking the onions creates deep flavor, making this the best chip dip for your next game day or party.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup full-fat sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper.
  2. Cook the onions slowly, stirring occasionally, for 30 to 40 minutes until they are deeply caramelized, soft, and dark brown. Reduce heat if they start to burn.
  3. Remove the skillet from the heat and let the caramelized onions cool completely, about 20 minutes.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the cooled caramelized onions, sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  5. Stir everything together until fully mixed and creamy.
  6. Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to fully meld.
  7. Serve cold with your favorite chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.

Notes

  • For the deepest flavor, do not rush the caramelization process; low and slow cooking is key.
  • If you need a quicker version, substitute the caramelized onions with 1 packet of dry onion soup mix stirred into the sour cream and mayonnaise base.
  • This dip tastes best when made a day ahead of serving.
